The Simple Video Kit I Still Recommend

A small Canon prime lens resting on a stack of books

When I started my Video Diaries, I didn't have a fancy rig. A Canon DSLR, one prime lens and a GoPro. That's it. And honestly that simple kit taught me more than any upgrade since 😎

The lens: a 35mm prime

The Yongnuo YN 35mm f/2 for Canon ($106.00, in stock when I checked 10/11) is the same lens I linked back then. Wide enough for rooms and trails, fast enough for evening light.

The bag

Everything rides in the MOSISO camera backpack ($65.99). I wrote a whole post on camera backpacks that changed my workflow.

The small camera

For trail and car shots I used a GoPro Session. If you still have one, a waterproof case ($12.99) keeps it going.

Why a simple beginner video kit wins

  • Less gear means you actually bring it.
  • One lens teaches you to move your feet.
  • You learn light before you learn menus.

Watch it in action

My old Video Diaries on YouTube were all shot on this kit. Pretty rough around the edges lol but you'll see what one lens can do.

FAQ

Is a 35mm lens good for video? Yes. It is close to how your eye sees, so rooms and walk-and-talk shots look natural.

Do I need a gimbal to start? No. Brace your elbows and walk slowly; add stabilization later.
