I do not drive all 105 miles of Skyline Drive when I want fall color. I pick one entrance, a handful of overlooks, and I turn around. The Drive is the only public road through Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Mile 0 is Front Royal. Mile 105 is the south end. On a clear day the park says the full Drive takes about three hours, and the speed limit is 35 mph in most places.

This is the road on a foggy morning. I pulled off so the photograph was not taken from the travel lane. All four wheels have to be off the pavement when you stop.
The entrances I actually use
Front Royal Entrance Station is mile 0, by Rt. 66 and Rt. 340. Thornton Gap, the Luray entrance, is mile 31.5 by Rt. 211. Rockfish Gap, the Waynesboro entrance, is mile 104.6 by Rt. 64 and Rt. 250. Swift Run Gap, mile 65.5 by Rt. 33 near Elkton, is the fourth vehicle entrance. It is not on the three short routes below.
A map app can send you to a gated service road. Those are not public entrances. Skyline Drive also closes for weather. I check alerts before I leave home, or I text SHENALERTS to 888777.
Where the gas is, and where it is not
The only gas on the Drive is Big Meadows Wayside at mile 51. The park says those pumps can be unreliable in a power outage. I fill the tank in town first, at Front Royal, Luray, or Waynesboro. I do not name a station price. Prices move.
Save on gas
GasBuddy is a free app for station prices before I leave town. I pay with the GasBuddy+ card. Code EM4F5VF is for extra savings on the first fill-up. Offer may vary. I am not quoting a cent amount.

Three short color routes
From Front Royal I stay in the north. Dickey Ridge Visitor Center is at mile 4.6. No Name Overlook is at mile 5.3 and 1,985 feet, looking west-northwest over the Shenandoah Valley, with Massanutten ahead and Dickey Ridge to the right. Hogback Overlook is at mile 20.8 and 3,385 feet. It is the longest overlook in the park and looks north toward Gimlet Ridge. I turn around there. That is a color stop, not a crossing of the whole park.
From Luray I enter at Thornton Gap and drive south only to Franklin Cliffs Overlook at mile 49.0. It is at 3,140 feet and looks northwest toward Stanley. Then I go back out Thornton Gap.
From Waynesboro I enter at Rockfish Gap and drive north to Moormans River Overlook at mile 92.0. It is at 2,975 feet and looks east-southeast toward the Charlottesville Reservoir, also called Sugar Hollow Reservoir, on Moorman's River.

The three entrances will not match. Fog in the north can be sun in the south. I use the entrance closest to the tank I just filled.
What the park says about fall
The usual fall season is late September, October, and November, and a peak cannot be predicted. Days are usually 49 to 60 degrees, so I bring a layer even when the valley feels warm. The morning I go, I read the fall page, the park's Thursday update, and the webcams. October 14 is not a special color date. It is just a day on the calendar.

What the entrance costs before any pass
A private vehicle is $30 for seven consecutive days, unlimited re-entry for the driver and passengers. Children under 16 are admitted free. The Shenandoah annual pass is $55 for U.S. citizens and residents, for one year, the holder and passengers in one vehicle, up to four adults. Two seven-day vehicle passes cost $60, which is more than that annual pass. The America the Beautiful resident annual pass is $80 for U.S. citizens and residents visiting other federal fee sites, and it covers this entrance.

Entrance fees have been cashless since July 1, 2025. A card works at the station, and the pass can be bought ahead on recreation.gov. Waysides, gift shops, and restaurants still take cash. With cash only, buy the pass in town first: Front Royal/Warren County Visitors Center, 414 E Main St, Front Royal, VA 22630; Appalachian Trail Outfitters, 2 W Main St, Luray, VA 22835; or Bonobos Bakery, 1221 E Main St, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
Save on park entry
The Senior Pass is not free. U.S. citizens and permanent residents age 62 and older can buy a Senior Annual Pass for $20 or a Senior Lifetime Pass for $80. Applicants need proof of age and of citizenship or residency. Passes are not sold as gifts, because the person who qualifies has to show that proof.

A Military Annual Pass is free for current members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their dependents. A Military Lifetime Pass is free for veterans, including the National Guard and Reserves, and for Gold Star Families. The passes cover entrance and standard day-use fees, not camping, tours, reservation fees, or concessions. Pickup in person is free. A mailed physical pass can add $7.50 shipping on recreation.gov or a $10 processing fee at the USGS Store.

The Access Pass is free for U.S. citizens or residents of any age with a medically determined permanent disability that severely limits one or more major life activities. It does not have to be a 100 percent disability. Bring a photo ID and documentation of a permanent disability: a physician letter that states the disability is permanent, that it severely limits daily life, and the nature of those limits, or a federal or state disability-benefit document. The Access Pass page does not name ADHD or autism. A condition like those may qualify only when that documentation is there. A diagnosis by itself is not what the page asks for. The military pass page calls this a free lifetime pass. The Access Pass page, updated August 11, 2026, says the pass is free and does not use the word lifetime.

Every Kid Outdoors is free for U.S. fourth graders, including the home-school equivalent. The 2026 to 2027 pass expires August 31, 2027. At a site that charges by the vehicle, it admits children under 16 and all adults in one passenger vehicle. Print the paper pass and bring it. The rules say an electronic copy of that paper is not accepted. A separate digital pass is available on recreation.gov with a grown-up. The pass does not cover camping or special tours.

Children under 16 are admitted free even without that pass. In 2026, Shenandoah fee-free entrance days for U.S. citizens and residents are February 16, May 25, June 14, July 3 to 5, August 25, September 17, October 27, and November 11. Other fees can still apply. October 13 is not a fee-free day. The national passes page says fee-free days are open to everyone, then says that beginning in 2026 they are for U.S. citizens and residents. I follow the Shenandoah fee page.
Crowds and the lunch I pack
Fall weekends are the busy ones. The park says Front Royal and Thornton Gap have the longest entrance lines, so a weekday or the Rockfish entrance means less idling. I pack lunch. A wayside meal is separate from the pass.
A room if I am staying over
For a room near the Front Royal entrance, I use this stay link. I am not naming a hotel. The link is the Expedia program already in my affiliate list.

Start with one entrance and the overlooks on that stretch. The passes change the $30 only when you qualify. More trip notes are on Foster Your Journey. Prints from these ridges are in the Shop.
