Donuts, a massive hot sauce selection, and a longtime Virginia favorite just off I-66.
I've been stopping at The Apple House in Linden, Virginia, for years. If you've ever driven through, you've probably seen the black building with the stonework and the wooden bear out front holding a big wooden DONUTS sign.
It's a pretty familiar sight along this stretch of I-66, especially during fall when the trees surrounding the building are full of color.

The Apple House has been around since 1963, and there's a reason people keep coming back.
The donuts are a good place to start
The apple butter cinnamon donuts are probably what The Apple House is best known for. Covered in cinnamon sugar, they've been a staple here for decades.

They're also available for seasonal shipping, generally from October through April, so you don't necessarily have to be local to get them.
You can check availability and ordering details on The Apple House website.
More than 300 hot sauces. Yes, really.
This is usually where I end up spending my time.
I always grab a hot sauce when I stop here, and with more than 300 varieties advertised, I'm not exactly running out of options.

The gift shop has quite a bit beyond that, too. Virginia-made foods, apple butter, jams, peanuts, gifts, toys, and a little bit of everything mixed in.
It's worth taking your time to look around, especially if you've never been inside.
Grab a bite and stay a while
There's a full restaurant here serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including barbecue.
I also stop in to work sometimes. On this visit, I grabbed a table by the window with my laptop (paid link), the Rooster (a grilled chicken sandwich), Route 11 kettle chips, and a soda.
I charge it from my Anker power bank (paid link) over USB-C.

I like having somewhere familiar to sit, eat, and get some work done while I'm out.

A good stop before heading to Skyline Drive
The Apple House is right off I-66 at Exit 13, making it an easy stop if you're heading toward Front Royal or the northern entrance to Skyline Drive.
It's especially worth keeping in mind during fall foliage season. Stop for breakfast or lunch, browse the shop, and then head toward the mountains.
I use a Warmies (paid link) to keep warm on the cooler fall drives.
And don't feel like you have to drive all 105 miles of Skyline Drive. A few overlooks and a couple of hours enjoying the scenery can make for a good afternoon.

Before the drive up, I check GasBuddy (paid link, referral link) with code EM4F5VF, and Upside (paid link, referral link) with code LISA42442 for cash back on a fill-up. Savings and cash back vary by offer.
Check the National Park Service website for current road conditions and park information before heading up.
I've also shared some of my Shenandoah Valley landscapes and nature photography in my photography shop.

The Apple House isn't exactly a hidden gem. It's been a favorite around Virginia for a long time, and if you're local, there's a good chance you already know it.
For me, it's a regular stop. Donuts, something to eat, and a look through the hot sauces.
If you're heading through Linden and haven't been, it's worth pulling off the highway.
