Sunny Skyline Drive overlook above a green Shenandoah valley

The Shenandoah Valley,
from a local lens

Skyline Drive by season, my favorite photo spots, where to stay and easy walks with big views.

Where to stay

Hey friends! I live and shoot here, and this is the guide I send friends when they ask where to go. It's short on fluff and long on the stuff that actually helps: when to come, where the light is best and where to sleep.

When to go

Skyline Drive by season

Fall

Peak color usually lands on the high ridges in mid-October and drifts down into the valley through early November. Go at sunrise on a weekday; October weekends get busy at the overlooks.

Winter

My quiet season. Bare trees open up the long views, frost hangs in the river bottoms, and you'll often have an overlook to yourself. Pack traction cleats and check road status first.

Spring

Redbuds, dogwoods and wildflowers from late April. Waterfalls run strongest after spring rain.

Summer

Green everything, early-morning fog in the hollows and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Start early and finish by lunch.

Photo spots

Where I point the camera

  • East-facing overlooks at sunrise. Fog fills the valley below and the first light hits the ridges.
  • West-facing overlooks at sunset. Layered blue ridges, one behind the other.
  • River bottoms in winter. Frost and mist along the South Fork on cold mornings.
  • Back roads and old barns. Small-town Virginia is half the charm.

Respect posted closures and private land, and give wildlife plenty of room.

Where to stay

Cabins, small hotels and points stays

A cabin with a view

For a slower weekend, a mountain cabin with a porch is hard to beat. Book early for October.

Vrbo cabins near the park

Using hotel points

Brand hotels sit along I-81 and I-66, a short drive from the park entrances.

Marriott Bonvoy · Hyatt · IHG

Plan your trip

Before you go

  • Check the NPS road and trail conditions.
  • Fill up on gas before the park. There's little out on the Drive.
  • Layers, water and a headlamp, even for short walks.
  • Cell service is spotty. Download offline maps.

Shenandoah Valley FAQ

When is the best time to visit the Shenandoah Valley?

Mid-October for fall color, late April to May for wildflowers and green ridges, and winter for quiet trails and long views. Summer is lush but hazier.

Is Skyline Drive open all year?

The road is open year-round, but sections close for snow, ice and fog. Check the National Park Service road status page before you drive.

Where should I stay near Shenandoah National Park?

Luray is central to the Thornton Gap entrance; the northern valley towns are closest to the north entrance near I-66. Cabins and small hotels fill up on October weekends, so book early.

Do I need a park pass for Skyline Drive?

Yes. Shenandoah National Park charges an entrance fee per vehicle, or you can use an America the Beautiful annual pass. Check nps.gov/shen for current fees.
