By late afternoon on October 24, I was photographing the gardens and mountains above Gatlinburg. A few hours later, the sun was disappearing behind the ridgeline, the moon was coming into view, and the mountaintop was beginning to light up for Astra Lumina.
I visited on October 24, 2026, and photographed the gardens, mountain views, sunset and evening light displays. Prices and hours below are from Anakeesta's official pages, checked October 28, 2026. They change, so check the official site before you go. For where I stayed, the Saturday traffic and the national park morning, see my fall weekend guide to Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.
Is Anakeesta worth it in October?
Who gets the most out of it: anyone who wants mountain views, gardens and an easy evening without a hike. General admission covers the gondola or Ridge Rambler ride up and back, the gardens and views, the Treetop Skywalk, AnaVista Tower and the play areas. Admission is all-day, and the FAQ says you can leave and come back the same day, so you can plan around sunset.
Is admission alone enough? For me, the ride up, the fall gardens and the sunset over the ridge were the day. That's what my photos below show. We also walked the Treetop Skywalk and rode the Hellbender mountain coaster.
Is Astra Lumina worth budgeting for? It's a separate add-on ($18.99 on top of admission). I did it after dark, and if you're staying for sunset anyway, it turns the visit into an evening.
How long to allow: Anakeesta's FAQ suggests about 3–5 hours for a relaxed visit, plus more if you add coasters, the zipline or Astra Lumina. My photos run from about 3:30 to 8:21 p.m.
My afternoon and evening, by the time stamps on my photos:
| Time (about) | What I photographed |
|---|---|
| 3:30 p.m. | The ride up, enclosed cabins above Gatlinburg |
| 5:15 p.m. | The overlook deck above the valley |
| 6:30 p.m. | Sunset over the ridge |
| 6:40 p.m. | The moon over the ridge |
| 6:54 p.m. | The Astra Lumina arch at dusk |
| 8:21 p.m. | The lit path on the Astra Lumina walk |
Getting to the top: the Crystal Express

You can't drive to the top. Anakeesta replaced its original chair-and-gondola lift with the Crystal Express in May 2026. Today you can take an enclosed panoramic gondola up the mountain, about a four-minute ride, or choose the Ridge Rambler vehicle. Some older information on Anakeesta's website still refers to the former Chondola, so check the current Crystal Express page when you plan your visit.

The gardens and the views

The overlook pictured here is one of the scenic viewing areas. AnaVista Tower is a separate viewpoint with 86 steps to the top.

We rode the Hellbender, and it was a great ride, worth the money on the ticket. At the end, they offer a video and photos of your ride if you pay for them. A coaster pass is a separate add-on (Anakeesta's pricing page says it covers two rides on the Hellbender or the Rail Runner), and height and rider rules are set per ride, so check the requirements on the official pricing page before you go.
A black bear in a tree

The bears were in the trees above the Treetop Skywalk. In my words: "there was a family of bears hanging in the trees above."
Bear safety: black bears live throughout the Smokies. Anakeesta's own bear tips say never to feed or approach bears (Anakeesta on black bears). Enjoy them from a distance.
Sunset over the ridge

The sunset at the top of this page was the same evening, a few minutes earlier.
Astra Lumina after dark

Astra Lumina is a separate timed add-on, and you need general admission too. It's roughly a one-mile forest walk on uneven ground. Anakeesta's FAQ says to plan about 45 minutes for it, and closed-toe shoes help. The Astra Lumina FAQ says to allow at least an hour and a half to arrive, ride up and check in, and that you can enter 30 minutes before your ticket time. It isn't wheelchair accessible, and only sport or all-terrain strollers work there. The FAQ also notes that it includes flashing lights, strobes, lasers and theatrical fog, worth knowing if anyone in your group is sensitive to them.
The Firefly Experience is an illuminated display along the pathways after dark, included with admission when it's operating. It's seasonal, and Anakeesta's pages don't all agree on the dates, so check the seasonal calendar before you count on it.

What to know before you go
- Parking: Anakeesta doesn't provide parking. There's a paid lot beside the entrance (Parkway Parking, not owned by Anakeesta) and city garages nearby, including one across from Ripley's Aquarium. See hours, location and directions.
- Hours: they change by day and season. Check the current operating calendar on the hours page the day you go.
- Strollers and mobility: strollers roll right into the Crystal Express cabins. Shops, the dining pavilion, Black Bear Village and the scenic platforms are wheelchair accessible. The Treetop Skywalk, Astra Lumina and AnaVista Tower aren't.
- Weather: the park is open rain or shine. A layer for after sunset is a good idea up on the mountain.
- Pets and food: no pets, though ADA service animals are allowed. No outside food or drinks unless medically required.
- Busy days: same-day sales can pause when the park is at capacity, so buy ahead on a busy fall day.
Would I plan it this way again?
Yes. Ride up in the afternoon, walk the gardens while the light is good, stay for sunset, then do Astra Lumina after dark. If you're in the Smokies for the weekend, save the national park for an early morning on another day. The traffic, my hotel and the park morning are in my fall weekend guide to Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.
Are you riding up for the gardens and the sunset, or saving the day for the park road?
