Trunk or treats, small-town trick-or-treat streets, a state park ghost-story campfire, and a few paid extras, all a short drive from Front Royal.
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and there's plenty happening around Front Royal without spending a fortune. From downtown trick-or-treating and costume parades to corn mazes, haunted attractions and ghost stories around a campfire, October 30–November 1 offers a little bit of everything.
I've pulled together the local events, free activities, ticket prices and practical details I'd want before heading out. Some are just minutes from town; others are worth a short drive. Here's what's happening, what's worth paying for, and how I'd plan the weekend without trying to squeeze everything into one day. The corn field at dusk image is AI-assisted; the pumpkin and gourd photos are my own from past fall seasons. None are from these events.

Friday, October 30
Warren County Trunk or Treat, 6–8 p.m., at the Warren County Government Center, 220 N. Commerce Ave. in Front Royal. It's the second year for this one, it's free, and it's right in town, so it's an easy first night. Listed on the Front Royal town calendar.
If your crew wants a little spook after the candy, the Haunted Front Royal ghost tour leaves from WHS on Main, 205 E. Main St., at 8 and 9:30 p.m. It's $20. I didn't check whether it's sold out, so look before you promise anyone. Details on the Warren Heritage Society events page.
Saturday, October 31
This is the big day. Pick one morning stop, one afternoon stop, and one evening stop, and you'll have plenty.

Morning
- Warrenton Halloween Parade, 10 a.m. (line-up at 9:45), Main and 5th Street to the courthouse. Free, about 40 minutes from Front Royal. Listing
- Woodstock Halloween on Court Square, 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Free, with magic shows at 11:30 and 12:30, a petting zoo, pumpkin painting and face painting. Food is for sale. About 30 minutes away. Town of Woodstock
Afternoon
- Strasburg Spooktacular, all day downtown and free: a scarecrow stroll 11 a.m.–6 p.m., trick-or-treating 4–6, and a movie 6–8. Bring chairs if you stay for the movie. About 20 minutes away. Town of Strasburg
- Berryville Hallow-Main Street, 2–5 p.m. at Rose Hill Park, 35 E. Main St. Free. The organizers suggest parking at the Rixie Moore lot. About 30 minutes away. Berryville Main Street
- Hill High Farm in Winchester runs a less intense daytime haunted house, 1–5 p.m. Its own pricing page lists $13 cash or $14 by card per person. Less intense still means scares, and a family listing suggests ages 10 and up, so it may not suit every child. About 35 minutes away. Haunted Nightmares pricing
- Great Country Farms in Bluemont is open 9–5, and Saturday is the last day of its Fall Pumpkin Harvest festival. Pick-your-own pumpkins are $0.69 a pound, plus a corn maze and a big slide. It uses timed online tickets and nearly sold out last weekend, so buy ahead. About 45 minutes away. Great Country Farms

Evening
- Hometown Halloween, 4–6 p.m. at the gazebo at Main and Chester Street in Front Royal: a Jeep showcase and a candy crawl. Free. Town page
- Luray Trick-or-Treat Main Street, 5–7 p.m. on E. Main St., with a costume contest at 6. Free. It's big, with more than 1,000 kids last year, so park by Town Hall and come early. About 30 minutes away. Town of Luray
- Ghost of Virginia State Parks campfire, 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Shenandoah River State Park, about 15 minutes from town. Ghost stories and s'mores. Registration is required, and you'll pay the park's $10 parking fee per vehicle. Virginia State Parks event page
Sunset is around 6:13 p.m. on Halloween, so the final trick-or-treat hour and the state park campfire will take you into dusk and darkness. Bring a flashlight and an extra layer.

Sunday, November 1
Not much is scheduled, and honestly that's fine. Clocks fall back an hour Sunday morning, so everyone gets a little extra sleep after a late Saturday. It's a good day for a slow drive and some fall color, and the candy sorting will take care of itself.

A suggested plan
If I were mapping out a cheap, mostly free weekend, I'd pick one main outing and one evening activity each day instead of trying to do everything:
- Friday: Trunk or Treat from 6 to 8, then dinner. If everyone's still up for more, the 9:30 p.m. ghost tour ($20 each) leaves time to finish trick-or-treating and eat first. It's optional, so check that tickets are still available.
- Saturday main outing: Woodstock's Court Square at 11 for the magic show, or the scarecrow stroll in Strasburg in the afternoon.
- Saturday evening, pick one: Hometown Halloween in Front Royal (4–6), Luray's trick-or-treat street (5–7), or the state park campfire at 6:30 (register ahead, $10 parking). Hometown Halloween ends at 6, so getting to the campfire by 6:30 is tight once you count costumes, parking and finding the meeting spot. I'd choose one.
Swap: the Hill High daytime show (1–5 p.m., $13 cash or $14 card) in place of the morning outing.

Before you go
Times and details came from the organizers' pages and listings as of October 27, 2026. Plans change, especially with weather, so check the event page the day you go. Drive times are rough estimates from Front Royal, not live traffic.
