TikTok the app and TikTok Shop are different doors. One is the account that posts. The other is a store, or a permission to tag products. I am still learning which door opens which tool. The steps below are the official US pages I opened on October 27, 2026. If a button is missing, the usual reason is country, follower count, or an invite, and I say so when the page says so.

Personal account or Business account
TikTok's account page describes three choices: Personal, Business, and Organization. Most people, including creators, are on a Personal Account, and that page says Personal Accounts may use monetization programs. A Business Account is a public profile for a brand that wants commercial tools. It uses the Commercial Music Library, and it does not get the general music library, because those songs are cleared for personal use only. The same page says a Business Account can put a website link on the profile. (TikTok Help, checked Oct 27, 2026)
The same help article walks through the switch from Profile, then the menu, Settings and privacy, Account, and the control that changes the account to Business. I read those steps on the localized copy of that article on October 27, 2026, because the English page did not return the step list as text. Confirm the button label in your own app. TikTok's page does not say a Business Account is required for TikTok Shop.
On this project I have a stored rule to leave the review account as a Personal Account. The note says a Business switch is Commercial Music Library only and may drop Shop affiliate access. I did not find that "may drop" sentence on the Shop eligibility page, so I am treating it as a caution from my own notes, not as a rule TikTok printed. I am not switching it.
A website link on a Personal Account is a separate gate. My stored note says that bio link waits until the account has 1,000 followers. That is the same follower number the US affiliate application uses, below. I am not quoting a follower count from my own account.
| Account | What the help page says |
|---|---|
| Personal | May use monetization programs. The usual creator account. |
| Business | Commercial Music Library only. Can put a website link on the profile. Not required for Shop, on the page I read. |
| Organization | Listed as a third choice on the same help page. |
Seller, official shop account, or affiliate
A seller is the shop. You apply in Seller Center, and the shop is a store with products, tax, and payout details. That is not the same thing as posting videos.
A creator bind is how a shop attaches a TikTok account. The US eligibility policy, updated September 25, 2026, names three creator types. It applies to creators based in the United States. (Creator Eligibility Policy)
| Role | How you get it | Followers the page names | What you can promote |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affiliate creator | You self-apply. No shop bind required. | At least 1,000 | Product Marketplace, other sellers' products |
| Official shop creator | The seller invites you. Account name matches the shop. An organization account has to be the same legal entity. | No follower minimum to bind | That shop only. No Affiliate Product Marketplace. |
| Marketing creator | The seller invites you. Names do not have to match. | Marketplace for other sellers needs at least 5,000, requested in Seller Center | The bound shop, and the marketplace when that permission exists |
The companion page for the marketing-creator marketplace path is What you need to know, updated October 9, 2026. The menu it names is TikTok Shop Toolkit, Manage Your Account, Affiliate Permissions.
A shop is tied to its official creator bind. The bind page says products can sync to that account's Store Page, and a deactivated shop can take the creator's e-commerce permission with it. Changing the linked account is not a casual toggle. My own shop record says one unlink already counted against a lifetime limit of three, and the replacement account is still waiting on e-commerce permission. I am not putting a number of days on that wait. The page I read does not print one. (Creator binds, checked Oct 27, 2026)
What the application actually checks
Both US pages agree on the shared bar: 18 or older, based in the United States, not a government or political account, in compliance with Shop content policy, Community Guidelines, and the Creator Code of Conduct, no prior e-commerce revocation, and not tied to accounts that lost that permission. Affiliate creators also pass identity verification. Official shop creators are exempt from that creator identity check. Marketing creators hit it when they want marketplace commissions.
Age confirmation, if you are asked, has to be finished within 2 months. The page lists up to 15 attempts across in-app recognition, a credit card, or an ID plus three real-time selfies. Identity verification can ask for your name, date of birth, address, and a government ID. While it is in progress, product links may be hidden. A commission account is a later step. The FAQ says it is not the same as the creator account, and it asks for personal and tax information after you have generated commissions. My October 27, 2026 account note says Shop withdrawals were blocked on business verification and a W-9. That matches the "tax details stop the payout" pattern, not a promise that every account sees the same screen.
Apply in the app: TikTok Studio, Monetization, TikTok Shop for Creator, Join now. The FAQ says you submit an application. You do not wait to be invited, unless you are accepting an official or marketing bind instead.
Pilot limits, and a disagreement between two official pages. After verification, an affiliate with fewer than 5,000 followers enters a pilot of at least 30 days. The September 25 policy says that pilot allows products with a Shop Performance Score of 95% or higher, up to 3 shoppable videos a day, up to 3 shoppable LIVEs a week, and no campaigns. Graduation is 5,000 followers and 30 days in the program. The October 9 page, in one FAQ answer, says creators with fewer than 5,000 followers can post up to 5 shoppable videos a week. I am not averaging those. Read the number on your own Pilot Program screen.
The same September 25 policy says that from May 11, 2026, US creators and merchants may post up to 30 shoppable short videos a day and up to 60 shoppable photo posts a day. A pilot cap can be lower than that daily cap. Extended Pilot, if TikTok tags you that way, is stricter still, and the page says you may not be able to graduate while the tag is on.
Newly bound official and marketing accounts can enter a 30-day early-stage pilot with a posting limit of up to 3 e-commerce videos a day. Graduation there is 30 days bound, at least 1,000 followers, and a compliance check. Unbinding and rebinding can reset the clock.
How a product link gets onto a video
The US "add a product link" article, dated September 15, 2025, and the later link-to-videos article, both checked Oct 27, 2026:
- Record or upload the video.
- On the posting page, tap Add link, then Product. You can also link a shop, a category, or a collection, when those options show.
- Pick the product from your showcase or from products you are allowed to add. If it is not in your showcase yet, the older article points at "Add more product" in the marketplace or a targeted invitation.
- Edit the name shoppers see, preview, and post.
A yellow cart is what viewers tap. You can add a link later to some videos posted in the last 30 days, from TikTok Shop Creator Center, Link products. The FAQ on that tool says the video has to use Commercial Music Library sound, the product has to match the video, and the video has to follow the content policy. You cannot swap an existing product link for a different product. Relinking an out-of-stock item was, on that page, not available to every creator.

Photo posts versus video
I went looking for a stored note that a one-photo post cannot take a product link. I did not find that sentence. What the US pages say now is more specific, and the pages do not all match.
- The eligibility policy's May 11, 2026 limit counts shoppable photo posts, up to 60 a day, separately from shoppable short videos.
- The Shoppable Carousel article, updated September 15, 2026, says the feature is in beta for select sellers, needs at least two photos, and that only some creators have access. Its FAQ also says there is no daily limit on carousels, which disagrees with the 60-a-day line above. (Shoppable Carousels)
If a single photo has no product button, that fits the two-photo minimum and the "some creators" line. Open the post screen and see whether Products is there before you promise a product button.
Disclosure on TikTok
Use the content disclosure setting. An affiliate product is a third-party promotion, so the policy page treats it as branded content and the label is Paid partnership. Your own business is Promotional content. Say it in the caption too. "#ad" or "paid link" still belongs next to the recommendation. The FTC page says the platform label is not enough alone.
If the clip is realistic AI, turn on the AI-generated content label as well. A watermark on your own photo is not that label. The AI switch and the commercial switch are two settings. After the post is up, the commercial label cannot be switched. You would take the post down and make a new one. I don't delete a live clip to "fix" it. The stored rule is to leave a published clip up and post a new update later.

Region note: every follower number and posting cap in this section is from the United States seller-university pages. A creator outside the US should open their own region's eligibility article. I am not copying UK or Singapore rules into a US setup.
